About Us

Established in 1877, The Marshall News Messenger publishes a print edition Tuesday through Sunday, providing the latest news from the city of Marshall, Harrison County and surrounding areas.

More than a newspaper, readers can now access the news in a variety of ways as the newspaper has an active online presence, via its website, as well as lively social media engagement, via Facebook and Twitter. Readers can also access a digital E-Edition replica of the print edition just by downloading the News Messenger’s free app on their smart phones.

Originally known as the Marshall Morning News, the newspaper today covers the Harrison County seat of Marshall and the surrounding area from Hallsville on the west to the Louisiana border on the east, and from northern Harrison County south into northern Panola County. We also cover the city of Jefferson in Marion County.

With a population of more than 24,000, Marshall is the county seat of Harrison County, an energy and timber-rich region brushing up against the Louisiana border. The birthplace of Lady Bird Johnson and boxer, TV personality and pitchman George Foreman, it was nicknamed the “Cultural Capital of East Texas” because of the presence of many artistic students, a robust performing arts industry and creative local businesses. The city is renowned for conducting one of the largest lights festivals in the nation, known as the Wonderland of Lights. It has also been proclaimed as the official “birthplace” of Boogie Woogie, originating in the early 1870s when Marshall became the headquarters of the Texas and Pacific Railway, creating employment for recently emancipated laborers who would play the piano for their nightly entertainment.

Marshall is also a college town as it is the home of four establishments of higher education: East Texas Baptist University, a private four-year university; Wiley College, a four-year, private, historical black liberal arts college; Panola College, an accredited community college; and Texas State Technical College, a two-year technical school.
